Wanted: Future Journal Themes

Postby Brian Herndon » August 13th, 2019, 9:09 pm

As a member of the disability community (I have a son with Down syndrome), a former public school teacher and administrator (20 years), and a current professor of education, I have seen so many families struggle with the special education system. There is such a fight for so many to get their children included in the general education classroom. In 2019, parents should not still be fighting for the civil rights of their children, yet they are! Every. Single. Day! I think that administrators need to be knowledgeable about special education. I think that teachers need to be trained in special education. I think that TPP’s need to do away with single majors in elementary education, and they need to move toward a dual major in elementary and special education. I am new to this world, so there may be an issue dedicated to this. But, if not, this is a huge issue in the field. So many fight for the rights of their children with disabilities, yet, school district’s refuse to follow the law!
