The Call for Leadership
Department chairs have often seen themselves as scholars who, out of a sense of duty, temporarily take responsibility for the administrative tasks of the department. However, most agree that the times of "amateur administration" are over. The position of chairperson is one of leadership, and the demands it poses are significant. From the stress and conflict inherent in the position to the cost to academic careers and personal lives, the position is unique within the academy and institution. Those accepting the role need access to leadership development designed specifically for them.

Institute Goals
In response to this need, the Leadership Institute for Department Chairs assists participants in pursuing three objectives.

  1. To develop an understanding and clarity about the leadership style, motives, and roles of department chairs. Sessions will help participants understand and assess their styles and motives and provide guidance in developing their roles as department leaders.
  2. To acquire the key leadership skills required to be an effective department chair. Sessions will explore the skills necessary to effectively lead your department team, efficiently manage your time, creatively resolve conflicts, and transform distress into positive and productive stress.
  3. To deal with the professional and personal trade-offs in balancing their lives. Caught between conflicting interests of faculty scholarship and department administration, chairs face the challenge of merging their individual interests with the department goals.

Institute Resources
The Institute draws on the expertise of nationally recognized experts in the leadership development of department chairs, as well as policy makers and opinion leaders from national organizations and colleges of education. The three-day program will use the latest research on department chairs, case studies, simulations, and department chair self-assessment to engage the participants. A notebook of readings and resource materials will be provided. Participants will provide a wealth of knowledge, insight, and experience to be shared in the sessions as well as in topical "breakfast conversation" tables, social activities, and networks.
